How to Travel from Tallinn to Helsinki (The Easy Way!)

Helsinki is so close to Tallinn that it would be a shame not to visit! Whether you take a day trip from Tallinn to Helsinki or spend a few days in Finland, you won’t regret making the trip from Tallinn to Helsinki.

The best part is that it is super easy to travel to Helsinki from Tallinn.

There are two ways you can travel from Tallinn to Helsinki, but one is by far superior. I always recommend you take the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki rather than flying.

It is the more cost effective way to travel between the two cities.

Not to mention it is better for the environment and will actually save you time when you factor in getting to and from the airport and how early you have to arrive at the airport.

Plus you get to take a ferry between two countries! You don’t get the chance to do that very often, and it is super fun!

Today, I’m going to share all the information you need to know to seamlessly travel from Tallinn to Helsinki.

I’ve made the trip before, and I’m going to share all the mistakes I made along the way, so you can avoid them!

Spoiler: my mistake involved sitting on a freezing cold boat floor for the entire journey. It was not fun.

Before We Get Started

Figuring out how to travel between cities is one of my least favourite parts of travel. That’s why I write these guides for you!

I hope my transportation guides help you effortlessly plan your journey from one city to another, and you find all the information you need in one place.

I’ve created a few other Estonia transportation guides.

Here they are in case you’re planning a more thorough trip through Estonia rather than just visiting Tallinn:

Estonia is a highly underrated European country. It is full of beauty and nature, and I highly recommend you get outside of Tallinn and see what else Estonia has to offer!

Option One: Taking the Ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki

Without a doubt taking the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki is the best way to travel between the two cities.

It is fast, inexpensive, and there are multiple departures every day.

Not to mention the departure and arrival locations are super convenient!

How Long Does the Ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki Take?

Travel time can vary a little bit, but it will take you between 2 and 2.5 hours to travel to Helsinki from Tallinn on the ferry.

This doesn’t include getting to the ferry at least ten minutes before departure, but your trip will definitely take you less than three hours from hotel door to hotel door!

How Much Does a Ferry Ticket Cost?

The price of your ticket depends on a few things. It depends on what ferry company you travel with, what time of day you travel, the day of the week, and whether or not you purchase a general ticker or reserve a cabin.

A general ticket will run you between €20 and €30. Reserving a cabin will cost you between €90 and €100.

You do not need to have a cabin because it is such a short trip from Tallinn to Helsinki.

I highly recommend getting a general ticket and sitting in the bar/restaurant or somewhere like that.

Where to Purchase Your Ferry Ticket

There are a few different ways you can purchase your ferry ticket, but I think the best option is buying it online in advance.

I like to go to Direct Ferries to get a sense of the prices and departure times and the head over to the website of the company I chose and book my ticket directly with them.

I normally book my tickets with Tallink. It has the most departures per day and is very affordable.

There isn’t much difference between the ferry companies though so choose whatever one works best for you.

If the ferry isn’t full, you can show up at the terminal on the day you depart and see if you can get a last minute ticket.

This often works on weekdays and during off-peak season, but it is still better to purchase your ticket online in advance.

You don’t want to have to wait around all day trying to get on a ferry when you can pre-buy your ticket and know for sure you have a spot!

Tallinn Estonia

Where Does the Ferry Depart From?

This is where it gets a little bit tricky.

Each ferry company has their own terminal where they depart, so you need to read your ticket and follow the signs at the harbour.

It shouldn’t be much of any issue (if any) because normally there is only one ferry departing at a time.

If you run into any issues or are unsure of where to go, just ask someone at the harbour, and they’ll be happy to help.

The terminal for all the ferries departing from Tallinn are located just outside the old town. In fact, you can see the old town from the ferry!

The easiest way to find the ferry terminals is to stick it into Google maps or follow the signs in the old town.

Basically, walk towards the water, and you’ll find them!

Where Does the Ferry Arrive at in Helsinki?

There are two ferry terminals in Helsinki. Two of the companies dock at the West Terminal and one docks at the A Terminal.

A Terminal is closer to the heart of Helsinki, but West Terminal is within walking distance of the city centre as well.

If you arrive at West Terminal and don’t want to walk, you can either take tram 7 or 6T to get to the city centre.

You most likely will be arriving at West Terminal so be sure you have a plan on how you’re going to get to your accommodation before you arrive!

Pros of Taking the Ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki

  • Inexpensive
  • Quick
  • Convenient arrival and departure locations

Cons of Taking the Ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki

  • The ferry can be a bit chilly during the winter months
  • You have to pay to store your luggage
  • Luggage storage lockers don’t come in super large sizes

Tips for Taking the Ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki

There are a few things you need to know about taking the ferry to Helsinki from Tallinn.

I made some major mistakes the first time I took the ferry between the two cities, and I want to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes!

You May Not be Able to Store Large Luggage

This was my biggest mistake the first time I took the ferry between Tallinn and Helsinki.

I was backpacking through Europe and had a 55L backpack!

By the time I finally found the luggage storage area, the few large lockers were already taken, and I had to keep my luggage on my the whole trip.

This meant I wasn’t able to sit in the restaurant/bar and had to sit on the cold floor.

If you have large luggage, try to be one of the first people on the boat to ensure you snag a locker big enough to fit your bags.

Bring Your Passport- Even if You’re Only Taking a Day Trip

Finland and Estonia are both part of the EU, and you typically don’t have to show your passport when travelling between the two cities.

You may be tempted to leave your passport behind in Tallinn- especially if you’re only taking a day trip to Helsinki- but that is a mistake.

Both Estonia and Finland have the right to ask to see your passport when you arrive in their country.

If you don’t have your passport on you, you won’t be able to get off the ferry.

It isn’t common for either country to check passports, but you never know. You don’t want to take the risk and then be on one of the few boats that have passport control!

Helsinki, Finland

You Can Purchase Food and Drinks on the Boat

There are restaurants and bars on the ferry, but there is also a small liquor store onboard.

If you’re travelling from Tallinn to Helsinki and know you want to have some drinks in your room in Helsinki, you should consider purchasing your alcohol onboard the ferry.

It is often less expensive and has fewer taxes than the alcohol in Helsinki.

The restaurant food and drinks are expensive, so you may want to only purchase something small to be able to sit in them and wait until you arrive to find something more affordable.

Although, the food in Helsinki is very expensive, so you may just want to purchase lunch on the boat rather than in Helsinki.

Arrive at the Terminal Early

Even though you pre-purchased your ticket, there is limited seating on the ferry.

You don’t want to be the last one on the boat otherwise you’ll be like me and have to sit on the floor.

I suggest arriving at the terminal at least 20 minutes early, so you can be one of the first people on the ferry.

There is Wifi on the Ferries

The majority of the ferries travelling from Tallinn to Helsinki offer guests complimentary wifi!

Yay!

It is easy to connect to, and the signal is pretty decent considering you’re on the boat in the middle of the water.

Just be sure you’re being internet safe!

The wifi network isn’t secure, and you’re putting yourself at risk of having your online information and data stolen.

The best (and only) way to protect yourself when using a public wifi network is by installing a VPN on your devices.

It costs less than the price of a latte per month, and you can protect up to six devices with a single subscription!

I always say that if you can afford to travel, you can afford to protect yourself with a VPN.

Option Two: Flying from Tallinn to Helsinki

Both Tallinn and Helsinki have airports, so you could fly between the two cities. I don’t recommend it though.

It is way more expensive than taking the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki and actually takes longer.

By the time you factor in how long it takes to get to the airport, checking into your flight, waiting for your flight, boarding your flight, flying, deplaning, waiting for your luggage, and getting from the airport to your accommodation, it takes significantly longer than the ferry.

So, unless you’re already at the Tallinn airport, you shouldn’t even consider flying from Tallinn to Helsinki.

The ferry is without a doubt the superior option!

Tallinn Estonia

Conclusion

Taking the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki is quite fun. Especially if you’re travelling during the warm months and can sit on the deck when you’re leaving Tallinn and arriving in Helsinki.

You can get some amazing photographs!

The ferry is the most affordable way to travel between the two cities, and it is so quick that you could easily visit Helsinki as a day trip as part of your trip to Tallinn.

I highly recommend you make the journey between the two cities.

They are quite different and each has their own unique style and vibe.

With it being so easy to travel between the two cities, there is no excuse not to explore both!

How to Travel from Tallinn to Pärnu (The Easy Way!)

Most tourists only visit Tallinn, Estonia, but that is a huge mistake. Today I’m going to show you how easy it is to travel from Tallinn to Pärnu!

You’ll have no excuse not to get outside to Tallinn and see more of what Estonia has to offer!

Pärnu is one of the most popular getaways for Estonians and has some of the nicest beaches in the country. The city is super laid back and has some of the best local restaurants and little shops in Estonia.

It is truly a shame to miss out on visiting Pärnu when you’re in Estonia. Especially since it is so easy to travel from Tallinn to Pärnu!

There are two ways to travel from Tallinn to Pärnu. The first is to take the bus, and that is the recommended way to get to Pärnu from Tallinn. Buses leave almost every hour, and the journey is less than 90 minutes. The second way to travel from Tallinn to Pärnu is by car. This is only advisable if you’re doing a road trip across Estonia, and you shouldn’t rent a car just to drive to Pärnu from Tallinn.

There used to be a train that went from Tallinn to Pärnu, but it was discontinued in 2019.

The train from Tallinn was the only train that serviced Pärnu, so there was no reason to keep the train station in Pärnu open. There were plans for more trains to service Pärnu, but it never came to fruition, and the project was shut down.

The good new is that taking the bus from Tallinn to Pärnu is super easy, and there are very frequent buses.

Locals rely on the bus to travel from Pärnu to Tallinn, so the Estonian government makes it really convenient to take the bus between the two cities.

Before We Get Started

I love writing these transportation guides for you!

Figuring out how to travel from one city to another is one of my least favourite aspects of travel, so when I figure out the easy way to travel between cities, I need to share it with you!

I hope these posts make your travel life easier! I love when I stumble across articles like this when I’m planning a trip. It makes the entire process so much easier!

Here are the other Estonia transportation guides I’ve written. Hopefully they can help you plan the perfect Estonian holiday!

Tallinn Estonia

Option One: Taking the Bus from Tallinn to Pärnu

99% of travellers will take the bus from Tallinn to Pärnu. It is the most convenient, least expensive, and only public transportation option you have.

If you don’t want to drive yourself to Pärnu from Tallinn, you’ll be taking the bus!

Buses in Estonia are super comfortable, inexpensive, depart frequently, and run on time more often than not.

You’ll have an excellent bus ride from Tallinn to Pärnu even if you hate buses and avoid them at all costs!

How Long Does the Bus from Tallinn to Pärnu Take?

Estonia is a small country, so it doesn’t take long to travel between cities.

Each bus ride varies in time a little bit depending on what time of day you leave. Your journey will, obviously, be longer if you leave during rush hour and shorter if you depart during off-peak hours.

On average, the bus ride from Tallinn to Pärnu takes between 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Not bad for a journey that covers just under 130km!

How Much Does a Bus Ticket Cost?

The price of your ticket, again, depends on when you leave Tallinn.

Your ticket is cheaper if you leave during off-peak hours on a weekday and more expensive if you travel on the weekend or during rush hour.

A bus ticket from Tallinn to Pärnu will set you back between €6.50 and €15. That is approximately $8 USD to $18 USD.

Where to Purchase a Bus Ticket

You can either purchase your bus ticket online in advance or purchase it in person at the bus station the day you depart for Pärnu.

Lux Express is the bus company that services Estonia, and you can purchase your ticket online through their website.

Their website has an English translation, and they accept foreign credit cards. Booking you bus ticket in advance is super easy, and I highly recommend this option.

You can even book it a few hours in advance if you don’t like planning too far ahead.

Lux Express accepts e-tickets, so you can simply show the bus driver your confirmation email and not have to worry about finding a printer and having a paper copy of your ticket!

Your other option is to purchase your ticket at the bus station right before you depart.

There are almost always seats available on the next bus, so you likely won’t have to wait for another bus because the first one is full.

This is a great option if you want to pay with cash and not use a credit card!

I do think purchasing your ticket online in advance is the best option though. You don’t have to arrive at the bus station early to purchase a ticket, and you know you have a seat on the bus you want to take!

Parnu, Estonia

Where Does the Bus Depart from in Tallinn?

Every bus departing from Tallinn to Pärnu departs from the Tallinn Bus Station.

The bus station in Tallinn is 2.5km outside the old town city centre, but it is still really easy to get to!

The easiest way to get to the bus station is to take an Uber or taxi. It takes less than 10 minutes and only costs a few Euros.

You also have the option of taking a intracity bus to the bus station. Buses number 2 and 4 go directly from the old town to the bus station.

The journey takes about 20 minutes once you get on the bus.

Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance, so you’re not standing at the bus stop for ages waiting for the next bus to arrive!

Your final option is to walk to the bus station. This is my preferred way to get to the bus station, and it takes about 20 to 25 minutes depending on how quickly you walk.

Where Does the Bus Arrive in Pärnu?

Your bus from Tallinn to Pärnu will arrive at the Pärnu Bus Station.

The bus station is in the perfect location!

It is right in the heart of the city, so you can easily walk to wherever you’re staying. If you’re staying in the city centre, your walk will be less than five minutes!

Most tourists stay near the beach though, and that walk it a little bit further. Depending on where exactly you’re staying near the water, your walk will range from 15 to 25 minutes.

It is a beautiful walk through a park, so I wouldn’t hesitate taking the time to walk unless you have a lot of heavy luggage.

Of course, you can always take an Uber or a taxi. It takes less than 5 minutes to drive to the beach area, and it will only cost you a few Euro!

Parnu, Estonia

Pros of Taking the Bus from Tallinn to Pärnu

  • The only option for people wanting to take public transportation
  • Inexpensive
  • Convenient and easy to get to and from the bus station

Cons of Taking the Bus from Tallinn to Pärnu

  • No flexibility, and you’re stuck with their time schedule
  • Can have delays due to traffic jams

Option Two: Driving from Tallin to Pärnu

Your other option is to rent a car and drive yourself from Tallinn to Pärnu.

I don’t recommend this option unless you’re planning a country-wide road trip. Otherwise, you end up spending a lot more on renting a car than you would if you just took the bus.

I’m not going to go into much detail with this option because I’m assuming you know how to drive if you’re renting a car.

The basic information you need to know is:

  • It takes just under 2 hours to drive from Tallinn to Pärnu
  • Look into whether or not your credit card provides rental car insurance to help cut down on the cost
  • Consider stopping in Laagri. It is a stunning coastal town right along the way
  • You have to be 19 years of age or older to rent a car in Estonia
  • Having an International Driver’s License is a good idea. Some tourists report having to have one to rent a car while others have been able to rent a car without it. You can easily apply for an International Driver’s License through the AAA or AMA (or similar company), and it allows you to drive legally in Estonia for up to one year
Tallinn Estonia

Conclusion

Not enough people visit Pärnu when they visit Estonia, and they really miss out on one of Estonia’s gems.

As you can see, it is super easy to travel from Tallinn to Pärnu, so you have no excuse not to visit the city!

You could visit Pärnu as a day trip from Tallinn, but it would be a very long day. I suggest planning a two-day trip to Pärnu to get a real appreciation for the city.

Especially if you visit in the spring or summer when you can visit the beach and enjoy the water!

I visited Pärnu in the winter, and while it was still amazing it would have been even better if there wasn’t snow all over the beach.

I think you’ll really enjoy Pärnu, and I hope this post has convinced you to visit the city since it is so incredibly easy to travel from Tallinn to Pärnu!

How to Travel from Tallinn to Tartu (The Easy Way!)

Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and the only city most tourists visit while in the country. That is a huge mistake because the rest of the country has so much to offer! My favourite city in Estonia is Tartu. Today I’m going to teach you have to travel from Tallinn to Tartu, so you can experience everything the beautiful city has to offer!

Tallinn is at the top of the country across the sea from Helsinki, and Tartu is at the very bottom of Estonia.

Over 180km separate the two cities, and it can be a bit daunting to figure out how to get from Tallinn to Tartu.

This post will solve that problem and take the uncertainty out of travelling between the two cities.

There are two ways you can travel from Tallinn to Tartu: bus or train. They both cost about the same, but the train is quicker. However, the buses run more often and fit more schedules. Finally, you have to consider where you catch the bus or train. The bus station in Tallinn is further outside the old town than the train station, but the train station in Tartu is quite a ways away from the city centre. With all that considered, the best way to travel from Tallinn to Tartu is by bus.

No matter whether you choose to take the bus or train from Tallinn to Tartu, it is well worth the journey.

You won’t regret visiting Tartu on your trip to Estonia!

Option One: Taking the Bus from Tallinn to Tartu

The bus is my preferred way to travel from Tallinn to Tartu. It is affordable, convenient, and comfortable.

The bus isn’t as quick as the train, but it is more convenient.

There are more departure times, and the drop off location in Tartu is closer to the city centre and easier to navigate to your hotel from than the train station.

How Long Does the Bus Take?

The bus takes, on average, 2.5 hours to travel from Tallinn to Estonia. Some buses are quicker and some are slower.

This includes a stop at the Tallinn Airport, which does slow down the bus journey a little bit. Every bus stops at the airport, so there isn’t a way around that stop.

At least you’ll snag a good seat before the people from the airport board the bus!

Of course, your journey can be delayed due to traffic or construction, so I don’t recommend planning anything for at least an hour or two after you’re scheduled to arrive in Tartu!

Tartu Kissing Statue

How Much Does a Bus Ticket Cost?

This, of course, varies depending on which bus you take.

Buses that depart during peak times cost more, and buses that depart at undesirable times cost less.

The average bus ticket from Tallinn to Tartu cost between €11 and €17. That is approximately $14 USD to $21 USD.

I think it is quite affordable and a fair price to pay for the bus ride.

Where to Purchase Bus Tickets

There are two options for purchasing your bus ticket from Tallinn to Tartu:

  • Online in advance
  • In person at the bus station

My preference is to purchase a ticket online in advance. It ensures you get the departure time you want and allows you to get to the bus station a little later than you would if you had to purchase a ticket on the day of departure.

Lux Bus is the company that served the Tallinn to Tartu route.

They run buses to Tartu from Tallinn pretty much every hour from about 6am to 11pm. You can purchase your tickets online through their website, and the website is in English, which makes it very easy for tourists to navigate.

One of my favourite features of Lux Bus is they accept electronic tickets! You simply take a screenshot of your ticket and show it to the bus driver or bus attendant when you board.

It is incredibly easy.

The other option is to purchase your bus ticket at the station the day you’re leaving.

This is great for spontaneous travellers who don’t want to plan their trip far enough in advance to pre-book a ticket online.

The downside to purchasing your ticket at the station is the bus you want may be sold out, and you might have to wait for the next one.

It isn’t a big deal and doesn’t happen very often, but it is something to consider when deciding how to travel from Tallinn to Tartu by bus.

Where the Bus Depart from in Tallinn?

The bus station, unfortunately, is a little bit outside of Old Town Tallinn where most tourists stay.

It is only 2.5km outside of the old town, and it is really easy to get to.

You can take an Uber for a couple of Euro, take bus 2 or 4 directly to the bus station, or walk.

I personally walk to the bus station because I’m one of those weird people who will walk everywhere even if it is the least convenient option. It takes about 20-30 minutes, and you walk through a new part of town you probably didn’t see while exploring Tallinn.

If you’re not like me, the best option is probably taking an Uber.

They are super affordable and the most convenient option. You can leave whenever you want and don’t have to plan your departure around a local bus schedule.

A car takes about 10 minutes to travel from old town to the bus station, and the public bus takes about 20.

All three are great options, and it just depends what your travel style and budget are.

Where Does the Bus Arrive at in Tartu?

The Tartu bus station is in the perfect location.

It is located just 700 meters away from Tartu Town Hall Square, which is the heart of Tartu and where most tourists stay. You can walk from the bus station to the middle of Tartu in about five minutes.

It doesn’t get any better than that!

It is a straight line from the bus station to the central square. Across the road from the bus station is Hotell Tartu. Have your back facing the hotel and walk away from it. Follow that straight line through a park, and you’ll arrive at the square.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

Tallinn Estonia

Pros of Taking the Bus from Tallinn to Tartu

  • There are a lot of departure times every day
  • It is comfortable and provides fee wifi (but make sure you have a VPN installed on your phone to protect your devices!)
  • The arrival location is unbeatable
  • Can pre-book tickets online

Cons of Taking the Bus from Tallinn to Tartu

  • The journey takes longer than the train
  • It is the same price as the train but takes longer, which kind of sucks
  • Have to stop at Tallinn Airport to pick up passengers (it isn’t really a bit deal though)

A Word of Warning About Using Internet on the Bus

Lux Bus offers guests complimentary wifi on board their buses.

It is an awesome feature, and I’ve had no trouble connecting to it any time I’ve used on of their buses.

The problem with connecting to a public and unprotected wifi account like the one on Lux Bus is that it puts you at risk of having your online data and privacy stolen and sold.

Hackers lurk around every corner, and you never know if there is someone connected to the public wifi you’re using that has bad intentions.

Most people are pure of heart and don’t use the internet for anything but scrolling on social media, but the few bad apples are the ones you have to look out for.

The only way to protect your online privacy and data is by installing a VPN on your devices.

A VPN makes using public wifi as secure as using your private home wifi where you’re the only person who knows the password.

When you have a VPN turn on and protecting your device, nobody can see what you’re doing online or steal your personal information (like your banking information).

Internet safety is so important, but too many people overlook it when they travel.

Option Two: Taking the Train from Tallinn to Tartu

Your next option is taking the train from Tallinn to Tartu.

The trains are comfortable, moderns, and quick. You can’t go wrong with choosing the train, and it is a very popular choice amongst tourists visiting Estonia.

How Long Does the Train Take?

Journey times vary depending on what time of day you leave and how busy the train tracks are.

On average, the train from Tallinn to Tartu takes between 2 hours and 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Most train journeys take 2 hours to 2 hours and 15 minutes, so it is quicker than the bus. The time you save by taking the train over the bus is negligible though since the journey times are so similar.

Every train from Tallinn to Tartu is direct, so you don’t have to worry about transferring trains part way through the journey!

How Much Does a Train Ticket Cost?

The price of a train ticket is very similar to the price of a bus ticket, but the cheapest train ticket is less expensive than the cheapest bus ticket.

Train tickets from Tallinn to Tartu range from €9 to €15 with most train tickets costing around €11. That is equivalent to approximately $11 USD to $18 USD.

Just like the bus tickets, I think this is a fair price for a journey that takes over two hours and is much less expensive than a similar train journey would be in France, the UK, or Germany.

Where to Purchase Train Tickets

Just like with the bus, you can either purchase your ticket online in advance or in person at the train station.

I highly recommend you purchase your ticket online in advance because you receive a 15% discount for doing so.

Elron is the train company in Estonia, and you can purchase tickets directly through their website. They have an English page on their website, and they accept foreign credit cards with no issue.

If you’re not interested in purchasing your ticket online in advance, you can purchase your ticket at the Tallinn train station.

You can either purchase your ticket with a human employee or by using an electronic ticket machine.

Both are very easy options. English is widely spoken in Estonia, and the ticket machine has an English option.

Tallinn Estonia

Where Does the Train Departure From in Tallinn?

Trains depart from the Tallin train station. The train station is a little difficult to find on Google Maps, so here is the address for you to copy and paste into the app if you need:

Tallinn, Toompuiestee 37, 10149 Tallinn, Estonia

The train station is just 750 meters from the old town, and you can easily walk to it in less than ten minutes!

It is along the main road, so it is quite easy to find if you’re walking!

I 100% recommend walking to the train station. It is so close to the old town that it isn’t convenient to take public transportation and most people who don’t have mobility issues can easily walk to the station with no issue.

If you’re not interested in walking or have a mobility issue, taking an Uber or taxi is the next best option.

I don’t suggest taking public transportation. It will take way longer than it needs to, and the Uber ride is so inexpensive that you won’t save money by taking the bus.

Where Does the Train Arrive at in Tartu?

The train arrives at the Tartu train station.

It is located 2km outside of the city centre, but if you choose to walk, it is only about 1.4km because you can cut through parks.

The train station is quite a bit further outside the city centre than the bus station, so it is a little less convenient. It is still a straight shot to the city centre though.

If you’re walking, put your back to the train tracks and walk straight ahead. Keep walking straight, and you’ll be in the city centre in about 20 minutes.

There are also a number of buses you can take to reach the city centre. Bus numbers 1, 2, 3, 8, 11, and 12 all travel from the train station to the city centre.

Your final option is to take an Uber or taxi. It takes about 5 minutes by car to get to the city centre, and it only costs a couple of Euros.

My preference is to walk, but if you’re not interested in walking, I think taking an Uber is the next best choice.

Tallinn Estonia

Pros of Taking the Train from Tallinn to Tartu

  • Most tickets are less expensive than the bus
  • The journey time is a few minutes quicker than the bus
  • The departure station in Tallinn is super conveniently located

Cons of Taking the Train from Tallinn to Tartu

  • The train station in Tartu is a bit outside the city centre
  • Not as many departure times
  • No wifi on the train

Conclusion

As you can see, it is very easy to travel from Tallinn to Tartu whether you choose to take the train or the bus.

You don’t have to transfer to another train or bus, and it is easy to walk to and from the bus or train station in both cities.

It is so easy to get to Tartu from Tallinn, so there is no excuse not to visit the amazing city of Tartu!

My personal preference is to take the bus from Tallinn to Tartu.

It departs more frequently, and I like being able to walk to the hotel within minutes when I arrive in Tartu. Plus it has free wifi onboard!

But just because I prefer the bus, doesn’t mean it is the right option for you.

Travel is so personal. You did the research by reading this article now go make the decision that suits you and your travel needs the best!
