The most convenient way to travel from Copenhagen to Malmö is taking the train. It takes about 45 minutes, and there are three trains that leave per hour. The train is the far more flexible option, and you can travel whenever works best for you rather than working around the bus schedule.

Option One: Taking the Copenhagen to Malmö Train

There is no doubt in my mind that taking the train from Copenhagen to Malmö is the best way to travel between the two cities.

It is quick, efficient, and by far the most flexible.

The Copenhagen to Malmö train is always how I travel between the two cities, and I highly recommend it to you as well.

Copenhagen, Denmark

How Long Does the Copenhagen to Malmö Train Take?

The train ride is so short. You barely feel like you’ve gotten on the train by the time it is time to get off!

The entire journey takes about 40 minutes.

I’m never not impressed by how easy it is to travel between countries in Europe!

The train to Malmö from Copenhagen may take slightly longer than 40 minutes if there is congestion on the lines, but it will never be more than an hour!

One other thing you may run into is the Swedish authorities checking passports.

So be sure to bring your passport!

They don’t always check passports, but it is a pretty common occurrence.

The process takes about five minutes, and then you’re free to go on your merry way and explore Malmö.

How Much Does a Train Ticket Cost?

There is a wide range of prices for the Copenhagen to Malmö train.

Ticket prices vary from 43 Krone (about $7 USD) to 175 Krone (about $28 USD).

The variation in ticket price comes down to what day of the week and what time of day you leave.

Your ticket will be more expensive if you leave during a peak time on the weekend and less expensive if you leave at an off-peak time on a weekday.

But, in general, you ca expect your ticket to cost somewhere in the middle of those two extremes.

I’ve never paid more than 93 Krone (about $15 USD) for a ticket on the Copenhagen to Malmö train.

Where to Purchase Tickets

There is no need to purchase your train tickets in advance.

There are so many trains departing every hour that even if one train is full, you won’t have to wait long to get on the next.

The trains rarely fill up, so you shouldn’t have to wait.

They may be busy though, and you may have to stand. It isn’t much of an issue though since it is such a short ride!

If you don’t want to stand, I highly recommend you avoid the train during peak commuting hours since many people live in one city and commute to work in the other.

You purchase your tickets at a ticket machine at either Copenhagen Station or the Copenhagen Airport.

Both locations work equally well, and it just depends where you are departing from.

The ticketing machines accept cash or card, so you can pay with whatever is most convenient for you.

Copenhagen Station is right next to Tivoli and is the same station most people alight from when travelling from the airport to central Copenhagen.

When Does the Train Depart from in Copenhagen?

You can either catch the Copenhagen to Malmö train at Copenhagen Station is central Copenhagen or at the airport.

As mentioned in the previous section, there isn’t an advantage to departing from one station over the other.

It just depends what station is most convenient for you.

Most people will get on the train at Copenhagen Station, but some people may want to go directly to Malmö without heading into Copenhagen first.

Where Does the Train Arrive at in Malmö?

The train arrives at Malmö Central Station.

It is literally in the heart of the city and is less than a five minute walk from the central square.

It couldn’t be a more convenient place to arrive in Malmö!

Option Two: Taking the Bus from Copenhagen to Malmö

The bus is slightly less expensive than the train, but it takes quite a bit longer and only has five departures a day.

It isn’t nearly as convenient as the train, and the train isn’t that much more expensive.

It is well worth it to pay a few extra dollars per ticket and take the train on your own schedule than save a little money and take the bus.

How Long Does the Copenhagen to Malmö Bus Take?

The bus takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach Malmö from Copenhagen.

It could take longer depending on traffic, but it certainly won’t take less time!

How Much Does a Bus Ticket Cost?

The good new is that bus tickets are less expensive than train tickets!

If you’re on a really tight budget, the train may be the right option for you.

A bus ticket from Copenhagen to Malmö costs between 44 Krone (about $7 USD) and 68 Krone (about $11 USD).

That’s a pretty good deal and may even be the least expensive thing you buy in a Nordic country.

Where to Purchase Bus Tickets

You have two options for purchasing your bus tickets:

  • Online in advance
  • In person right before departure

You don’t need to purchase your bus ticket in advance because they normally don’t sell out.

However, since there are so few buses departing daily, it may be in your best interests to pre-buy your ticket if there is a particular time you really want to catch the bus at.

There are three bus operators that travel to Malmö from Copenhagen:

All three operators are great so just hop on whatever bus is departing when you get to the station!

Copenhagen, Denmark

Where Does the Bus Depart from in Copenhagen?

The bus from Copenhagen to Malmö departs from Copenhagen Station.

The same station that the train departs from!

It is super central, and you’ll have no trouble finding it (especially since it is right next door to a theme park).

Where Does the Bus Arrive at in Malmö?

Just like the train, buses arrive at Malmö Central Station.

It is super convenient, and you can walk to wherever you need to go from the station with no issue!

Advantages of Taking the Bus from Copenhagen to Malmö

  • Least expensive option
  • Bus departs and arrives in city centres
  • You are guaranteed to have a seat, and there is luggage storage under the bus

Disadvantages of Taking the Bus from Copenhagen to Malmö

  • Only 5 buses depart per day
  • Takes significantly longer than the train

Option Three: Driving from Copenhagen to Malmö

The final option you have is driving to Malmö from Copenhagen.

I don’t really recommend this option unless it is part of a larger road trip around Denmark and Sweden.

It is expensive to rent a car, and while it only take 40 minutes to drive between the cities, by the time you deal with renting and returning the car, it is by far the longest way to travel from Copenhagen to Malmö.

Plus you have to deal with parking, and nobody enjoys that!

Be Internet Safe

One of the most important things you can do to protect yourself when you’re travelling is installing a VPN on your phone.

This cloaks your phone so nobody can access your online data and activity (including your banking information) while you’re using public wifi.

And when you travel, you will be using public wifi all the time!

A VPN makes using public wifi as safe and secure as using your personal home wifi where you’re the only person who knows the password.

My personal favourite VPN is NordVPN.

It is the fastest VPN on the market, and it is very affordable.

You can protect up to six devices with a singly NordVPN account, and it costs less than the price of a latte per month.

My philosophy is that if you can afford to travel, you can afford to protect your online data with a VPN.

Conclusion

As you can see, you really have two options when travelling from Copenhagen to Malmö. You can either take the train or the bus.

My personally preference is without a doubt the train.

It doesn’t get any more convenient, and it is so nice to show up at the train station basically any time of day and know there is a train departing in the next 20 minutes or less.

But the choice is yours!

Be sure you choose the option that works best for you and your travel needs.

The bus may be the better option for you if you’re on a very tight budget or want to be guaranteed a comfortable seat to relax in.

There are really no wrong answers when it comes to travelling from Copenhagen to Malmö!

The only thing I ask is that you have a great time in Malmö!

It is a really cool city and is super laid back. I highly recommend checking out the museum if you have time.

And if there is a hockey game on while you’re there, be sure to check that out too!
